Tortuga Tavern Review
Located in Adventureland, Tortuga Tavern, resides in the the old El Pirata Y El Perico (The Pirate and the Parrot) location directly across from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Serving Mexican food, which doesn’t exactly make sense since it’s “supposed” to be in the Caribbean, it does offer a quick-service meal in an open-aired but covered setting.
We tried the restaurant several weeks after it was refurbished, much lamented on the Internet, when the change-over was complete. We found the restaurant to be a nice change from the regular burger/hot dogs/chicken nuggets served throughout the Magic Kingdom. However, we were a little disappointed at the few choices available, especially for kids, but then again, we’re suckers for Mexican food and if we can enjoy it in the Magic Kingdom….#winning!!
There were three of us on this dining adventure: myself, Parkhopper Sid, and our good friend Kristen Kirk, better known as DVCMom! You can read more about her opinion of the experience HERE. We all decided to order something different so we ordered a beef burrito, nachos, but I wasn’t feeling very well, so I just nibbled off of the nachos. However, another guest was gracious enough to let us snap a quick picture of their Taco Salad…which doesn’t look like much…
But after a trip to the toppings bar, your taco salad will be the envy of Adventureland! Or at least, the people around you…
Overall the food was good, but probably not as good as your regular Mexican food haunt. We enjoyed it as well as the cool shade. We noticed much of the theming of the restaurant, which mainly consisted of new paint and recycling many of the El Pirata Y El Perico decor, with the addition of some Pirates of the Caribbean movie tie-ins. It wasn’t over the top, but for fans of the films, it was perfect.
If you are looking for a change of pace from burgers and fries in the Magic Kingdom, or are looking for a break from the glaring sun, Tortuga Tavern in Adventureland will make you glad you stopped in…but beware…here, they be pirates!! Arrr!!
