Disney’s Hollywood Studios: ‘A Park In Transition’

Television and filmmaking, Walt Disney World opened its combination theme park and production facility: Disney-MGM Studios.

These days, though, there’s not much studio left. Several of the original filming-focused attractions have closed, including a backlot tour that had already shrunk considerably before shutting down in September.

With much of its original theme gone, the park – its name changed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2008 — has become what experts describe as a park without much of an identity. There’s some old Hollywood glamour, a little bit of Star Wars and Toy Story, a couple of thrill rides and attractions based on entertainment that had its heyday in the 1980s.

“It’s a park in transition,” said Robert Niles, editor of ThemeParkInsider.com. “Clearly the original vision for that park didn’t take, didn’t endure, and it’s transitioning into something else.”

Tweaks to The Great Movie Ride announced last week and the impending removal of the towering sorcerer’s hat in the park’s center are just the beginning of what could be a big makeover.
