A Review of Kona Cafe’s Hawaiian Breakfast at Disneys Polynesian Resort

After a wonderful night’s sleep on Disney Property you wake up in need of an amazing meal to prepare for the upcoming day at one of Disney’s incredible theme parks.  Even if you are not staying at the Polynesian, we HIGHLY suggest a breakfast reservation at Kona Cafe at the Polynesian Resort.

Disney’s Polynesian Resort is a Walt Disney World icon.  It’s one of the original resorts built in 1971 (along with the Contemporary resort and the Magic Kingdom).  There are so many examples of the Polynesian culture built into this resort from top to bottom.  From the moment you walk in until the minute you leave, it gives you the sense of visiting the Hawaiian Isles without even leaving Florida.

The Food

If you have ever read WDW Parkhoppers or heard Parkhopper John on the Disney Parks Podcast, you know that he is a HUGE fan of Ohana, the family style buffet located inside the Polynesian.  And Kona Cafe’s dinner menu is pretty awesome too.  But breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, Kona Cafe magically turns it into an art form!

A French Press of Kona Blend Coffee

We encourage your breakfast at Kona Cafe to try one of the truly unique flavors of Hawaii, Kona Blend coffee.  For breakfast you can order a french press of the intoxicating liquid which is perfect for 2 people or for one person who wants to OPEN and then CLOSE a park on the same day.  It’s fresh, aromatic, and very rich, and if you really love it, you can take whole bean or ground Kona Blend or 100% Pure Kona coffee home with you to keep the island spirit alive.

With this great start you will want to move into the breakfast entrees:

The Fruit Plat, a healthier start to your day

For the healthier minded guests, Kona Cafe offers fresh seasonal fruit served in a pineapple with warm banana nut bread.  If you are enjoying the fruit plate, we would suggest that you ask for a side of the macadamia nut butter for your bread, trust us on this one…you will not regret it.

Steak and Eggs, a breakfast staple

For those of you who don’t want to tread too far off the beaten path, you can enjoy a traditional steak and eggs meal with home fried potatoes and a fresh baked biscuit.

The Somoan a new twist on a breakfast classic

If you are willing to try something different, Parkhopper John suggests the Somoan; 2 poached eggs with Hollandaise served over smoked pulled pork hash; imagine Eggs Benedict with pulled pork.  Now it may sound a but odd, but the flavor combinations are intoxicating.  With the arugula on top, the overall taste experience is amazing, and something that you can only get at the Polynesian resort.

Tonga Toast a Kona Cafe classic

But the real draw for having breakfast at Kona Cafe is the Tonga Toast, a glorious combination of french toast and a banana.    As crazy as it sounds the combination of banana, sourdough bread, cinnamon sugar, and Strawberry compote is not only a filling breakfast, it’s a great Polynesian spin on a breakfast classic.  Plus, because it has a banana inside of it, you can tell everyone that it’s healthy.

The Experience

Enjoying a breakfast at Kona Cafe is not only satisfying from a hunger standpoint, it’s visually appetizing as well.  With bright colors on the walls and the carpets, the music, the smells of the Polynesian, it truly makes you feel like you are in a resort on the islands.  The restaurant can easily seat a couple, to a small family, even a larger group quite comfortably.  The staff is always friendly and accommodating.  Even on those rare occasions when things don’t go “quite right”, the management are always there to make it right.

Overall

Kona Cafe is always our go-to dining experience for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  It’s convenient to the Magic Kingdom or as a stop along your day. Kona Cafe can be very busy, so we highly recommend dining reservations, but walk-ups are still possible.

If you have experienced a breakfast at Kona Cafe, please leave us a comment and let us know what you thought!

Your review of the Kona Cafe is perfect.
We stayed at the Poly in Nov 2011 celebrating our 60th birthdays and 40th wedding anniversary – also our first trip to WDW. The first morning we woke up was so awesome. Our first breakfast was here at Kona. I had heard about the french press and ordered one just for me (hubby doesn’t do coffee). The Kona coffee really impressed me. I asked for a french press for Christmas that year and I’ve had the same one ever since.
We’re going back to WDW this Nov 2013 and although we can’t afford another stay at the Poly, the Kona is on our not-to-miss list for breakfast.

Parkhopper Sid and I are addicted to the coffee at Kona… It’s awesome, I know that if I ever went to Hawaii, I would be over-caffeinated! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! We love to hear from other Disney friends…
