Thomas O. Staggs has been named Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company, it was announced today by Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. A 25-year Disney veteran, Mr. Staggs is Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, overseeing the strategy, operations and creative development of the company’s iconic travel and leisure businesses. Walt Disney Co. on Friday November 14th revealed a slate of digital initiatives, announcing a new partnership with Wal-Mart around movies, teasing the unveiling of a redesigned ESPN.com and showing how a growing number of YouTube stars would have their own apps. During a media event Friday at the Disney lot in Burbank, Chief Executive Bob Iger and senior leaders from each of the company’s five divisions said that traffic from smartphones and tablets is surging as they become the most-used devices for many of its consumers. Disney Says It Is Reducing Reliance On Advertising
In the most candid admission of how downbeat the television ad market is right now, ABC and ESPN parent Walt Disney Co.DIS +1.57% said it had decided to reduce its reliance on advertising. On a conference call on Tuesday night, Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger acknowledged that ad spending is growing faster on new media platforms than on traditional outlets.
