Three Reasons Disney Is Excited For Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Return

Later this month brings the return of the surprise hit television show Marvel’s Agents Of  S.H.I.E.L.D. and Disney couldn’t be happier.

At last year’s D23 event I was lucky enough to see the pilot and it truly blew the roof off the arena when it was revealed that “Coulson Lives!”  And each week, the episodes drew me in and I loved to see which Marvel characters would make a cameo.  It’s very safe to say that I am a fan.

I know I am looking forward to the show’s return, and so is Disney, mainly because the show is really, really, good.  If you are a fan of the movies, you will love the weekly adventures of what was one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s elite teams before Hydra’s infiltration was exposed.

Disney is also very excited for the show’s return on September 23 on ABC for three reasons:

Entertainment Earth

1.  The show performed remarkably well.

Contrary to published reports, the show performed very highly in it’s targeted demographic.  Once the dust settled, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended its freshman season as Tuesday’s No. 1 scripted show with adults 18-49. For perspective, that beat even the ratings achieved by CBS’ perennial Tuesday juggernaut, NCIS.

2. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cross promotes and benefits from the Marvel cinematic universe.
The Marvel big screen universe benefits by generating more public interest between movies by a weekly television show. Conversely, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. itself enjoyed solid ratings bumps from two direct crossovers with Thor: The Dark World, and from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

3.  Agents of Shield can launch new Marvel characters and properties.

For instance, last season’s introduction of Adrian Pasdar as Colonel Glenn Talbot, best known in the comics for his relentless pursuits of Hulk, may be Marvel’s way of using Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D to plant the seeds for a new solo Hulk film down the road.  I am also sure that the same template will be used for Marvel’s new series, Marvel’s Agent Carter focusing on the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. just after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger movie.
